Pastoring Life’s Rollercoaster

If you would have told me years ago that I would work at a church, or 2 or 3 – I surely wouldn’t have believed that! Not that I had anything against churches, but working at one definitely wasn’t in my purview (let me tell you, the first job I was offered at a church, I read that “employee handbook” cover to cover TWICE to see what I was getting myself into)… but I haven’t looked back since! It’s been an honor and joy to serve the church and work closely with staff and Pastors day to day for the past few years (I surely never would have imagined that I’d have several pastors personal cell phone numbers saved either, how my times have changed – thank God!), but those experiences deepened my understanding and appreciation for what pastors do on the daily.

A few weeks ago I was chatting with my pastor and he mentioned he had done a funeral for a 14 year old girl that day. Stopped me in my tracks. Took my breath away.  I’ve been thinking about it ever since…it was just a regular old Wednesday for me, I was feeling angst about some <stupid petty> stuff and then to hear what my pastor did that day, as he had to <drastically> switch gears to tend to other needs of the church, really impacted me. I appreciate the role of pastors in our life, but that day my respect and appreciation grew leaps and bounds. Wow-what a rollercoaster they ride… daily.

Pastor Appreciation

If you have a pastor in your life now, it’s a PERFECT time to reach out and tell him/her how they have taught you, helped you, challenged you, inspired you, guided you (FYI – Pastor Appreciation Day is Sunday, October 13th)! A simple card would probably mean more than you’ll know, or even an email or shout out would be a great start. And… please don’t stop there – if you are impacted by a pastor’s sermons or teachings then REACH OUT! TELL THEM, year-round! Don’t wait until Pastor Appreciation month in October. They work hard and tirelessly through life’s rollercoaster and a quick note or convo can really encourage them and refresh their soul.  We all love positive feedback, don’t we (well I surely do, it’s my Love Language)? But, we’re not usually on the forefront of the throws of life; doing funerals, visiting the terminally ill, counseling couples on the brink of divorce, leading a church, being a prayer warrior for all the people of the church, etc. And, while I’m at it, I’m going to take it one step further… make it a habit to do this with EVERYBODY who impacts your life! What a bright light we can shine if we shared with others when they touch our lives – what a beautiful world it would be!

If you DON’T have a pastor in your life, I HIGHLY recommend it! Seriously, check out a local church, visit a couple times, find one you like, set up a meeting with the pastor and introduce yourself, make a list of questions (at least that’s what I did), it’s a great way to start building a relationship and getting to know someone who will ride life’s rollercoaster with you!

Happy Pastor Appreciation Day to all the Pastors out there!

“…acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work…” 1 Thessalonians 5:12-13
